A new report has found that foot arthritis affects one in six people over the age of 50 and is more common in women than men.
Incidences of foot arthritis are fare higher in women than previously thought, according to the new study from Keele University.
The reason for this rise in the condition, that causes pain and swelling in the arch of the foot, could be due to the long term wearing of high heels but researchers can only speculate.
Three quarters of people with the condition report having difficulty with simple day-to-day activities such as walking, standing, housework and shopping.
More researched areas of foot arthritis are in the toe joint area, rather than the mid foot but the researchers noted that looking at the whole foot and the impact on people’s lives, it’s clear the problem is more widespread than they anticipated.
The foot is an area of the body where topical anti-inflammatory painkillers, such as Celafen, can be highly effective due to the thinness of the skin on the foot area and the proximity of the joints to the skin’s surface.
