Question: What is Co-Enzyme Q10 and is it good for energy levels.

Answer: Scientists have discovered that as we age, the body produces less of a vital chemical responsible for the production of energy.

Co-enzyme Q10 is found in every cell within the body. There are approximately 100 trillion cells in the human body and each must produce its own energy to carry out its functions.

Co-enzyme Q10 helps cells to do this by speeding up the chemical reactions that create energy.

In fact, it has a similar effect on the chemical reactions inside a cell as that of a spark plug in a car engine. Just as the car cannot function without that initial spark, the human body cannot function without Co-enzyme Q10.

Playing a central role in energy metabolism, it may improve heart function, help to normalise blood pressure, increase exercise tolerance and even boost your immunity.

Although we have a readily available supply of Co-enzyme Q10, the body's ability to produce it declines from the age of about 30 onwards which can cause a deficiency.

Certain prescription and OTC drugs which contain statins can also deplete Co-enzyme Q10 levels.

Statins are most commonly found in cholesterol lowering medication, such as Simvastatin, but as well as lowering cholesterol levels they also block the body’s ability to produce Co-enzyme Q10.

Fortunately, reinforcements are easy to come by.

As far as diet is concerned, sardines, mackerel, pork, spinach, soya oil, peanuts, sesame seeds and walnuts will all greatly help to improve your supply of this essential enzyme and B vitamins and iron will improve your body's ability to absorb it.

Stay away from stimulants such as coffee, alcohol and sugar though, as these will draw on your supplies.

Alternatively, you may wish to make sure you are getting enough by trying a Co-enzyme Q10 supplement.

One of the richest sources of Co-enzyme Q10 is Bio-Quinone Q10 from Pharma Nord. It has been found in clinical trials to dramatically boost energy levels as well as helping to maintain a healthy heart.

If on medication that contains statins, a Co-enzyme Q10 supplement such as Bio-Quinone Q10 is strongly recommended.
