Question: Why is it so important to protect your eyes from the sun?
16 September, 2008 – 17:16
Answer: Light is essential for us to see. But light can also be damaging unless the eye has adequate protection.
Light creates harmful free radicals in the eye that can cause oxidation. Oxidation can lead to impaired eye sight, particularly as we grow older.
Free radicals don’t just come from light. Smoke, pollution and even a bad diet (hydrogenated fats and alcohol) can also create these harmful molecules.
The body makes its own antioxidants to quench these free radicals, but it also relies on natural antioxidants in our diet such as vitamin C for full protection.
Two natural antioxidants that are particularly important for eyesight are Lutein and Zeaxanthin (pronounced zea zanthin.)
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are ‘caratenoids’, natural substances found in dark green, leafy vegetables that have antioxidant and other health promoting capabilities, particularly for the eyes. Because Lutein and Zeaxanthin are not produced by the body, they can only be obtained from food or supplements. Up to five servings of vegetables and fruits a day may be needed to provide an optimum level of these important nutrients.
Vitamins A, C and E, Zinc and Selenium all help protect the eyes. Higher Natures Visual eyes supplement has been formulated to protect eyes.
Visual eyes contains Lutein and zeaxanthin and other essential vitamins such as vitamin B2 for healthy vision.
So as well as wearing sunglasses it is important that you eat a healthy diet to protect your eyes from harmful damage caused by the sun and pollution.
