Our new natural cold sore rescue gel containing an extract of liquorice and melissa oil could help reduce the intensity of cold sore outbreaks.

Cold sores effect almost 30 million people in the UK. The herpes cold sore virus (herpes simplex) can be picked up from one simple kiss and stays with you for life, with some sufferers experiencing outbreaks as often as once a month.

Liquorice & Melissa rescue lip gel claims to help reduce the intensity of cold sore outbreaks due to its strong anti-viral action.

The two key cold sore fighting ingredients in the rescue lip gel are glycyrrhizic acid (GA) from liquorice and melissa oil.

What’ s the evidence that Liquorice & Melissa gel works?

Liquorice specifically targets the genes that are required to maintain the cold sore virus in its latent state by interfering with the production of special proteins that feed the infected cold sore cells.

Liquorice was found to be effective at fighting cold sores in a double-blind trial, carried out by the Herpes Viruses Association. It reduced the severity and duration of cold sore outbreaks for over 73% of subjects tested and, furthermore, 83% of subjects using the liquorice balm reported experiencing less severe cold sore outbreaks than when using their conventional treatments. While using the liquorice lip balm, testers reported that on average their cold sore outbreaks were only half their normal length.

Melissa oil is renowned for its strong anti-viral action. A study published in the prestigious journal Phytomedicine, found that a concentrated extract of 50 micro/ml had a significant anti-viral effect on cold sores.

I unfortunately suffer with cold sores on my chin rather than my lips when I am stressed or from the sun and they tend to grow quite large. I have used the liquorice balm for years and it does work in preventing outbreaks (when I remember to use it), however it does make my chin quite greasy! Is this gel less greasy, would this be better to use or is there a cream in development for skin sufferers like me?

i read about this gel a couple of yrs ago in a magazine, The sufferer in the story was almost identical in severety of her coldsores as my then 21yr old son. He had suffered from the virus for about 8yrs. His coldsores would develop anywhere on his face, browbone, nose, cheeks aswell as the more common lips and nose. Some of them where horrendous in severety and would last from 1 to 2wks and he could have more than 1 at a time. This gel has been brilliant for him. He uses it every day as a preventative and in the 2yrs he has only had about 4 sores instead of an expected 20 in that length of time. Not only many less but also much less horrible ones. So I would recommend using it as my son does every day.
